I thought it was something I said Mr J :) not sure I dont watch reports me too and could not get back in but i know them User [SteveF /209.214.194.195] joined forum at Wed Mar 08 21:00:06 EST 2000 hey steve the internet has been bogged down lately gary, any opinion on feeders? I promised sal that I would discuss risk magaenment tonight so that is what I will begin with but first if there are any questions first? I am waiting for someone to mention crude :) i did crude good call on crude will invite more male bonding :) i know you did it was before 8pm so it didnt counrt :)lol way to go again i am joking sal I just want to mention somehting last night amos and I somewhat disagreed and thaT is trading I thought it was really good that both sides were given , though. I really like this . but we are on the same page we both subsribe to wyckoff amos and I differ in our time frame I being a former floor trader am natually shorter term in duration I deal with clients and my backround generally causes me to be this way amos on the other hand used wyckoff in a larger picture but let me stress WE BOTH follow wyckoff rule and principles so I may be right on a daily basis or intraday but amos perspective is longer term and he isnt as sensitive many tomes do intraday or daily flucuations the GOAL of this class is for us to piece to toghether a puzzle as amos likes to say and come up with a picture that will make is money using wyckoff a man that I believe is critical to understanding markets so we may agre to disagree on somt imes frames but in crude we shoudl be looking for support and buy support with a stop so I enjoyed last night as it gave a great perspective last week when the "news" was that OPEC was increasing proction I knew that the market had to go higher becaus the cm doesnt annouce bearish news at the top so the market had to go higher to get more longs and to stop out more shorts and when I saw crude up so sharply yesterday I felt that this was short term climatic does everyone undersatnd what I explained with amos and I? y y yes y our time frame may be differnet but what is importatnt to now is that wyckoff is what we must follow as close to the principles as we can does the sell off in crude give us a better chance at long gold, or negate the long scnario well I dont like to equate the 2 in that way but I htink gold as we discussed lst night has shown demand several times and should work higher and crude has obviously proven itself so it issupplt that must prove itself supply does anyone think that todays action in crude is a top? trend still up..may be just volitility possible, need to see reaction if we dont believe this then we must find support to buy the trend is up so we should look for a buying opportunity distribution hasn't taken place yet very god lmarsh we should alays be alet for a trend change if gold was so bullish today why the sharp reaction today? yesterday being strong sorry accumulation still? yes steve User [davep /24.147.119.114] joined forum at Wed Mar 08 21:23:35 EST 2000 just like in the grains these sell offs are the cm saying "dont ride with me" hi davep hi everyone, sorry i'm late so they have these shakeouts.... hi hi dave u r excused.. lol hey davep did everyone watch the grain action today? y n looking @ it please summarize after yesterdays wek close the amrket spent mot of the day in positve ground beans strong I will sal :) this means to me that the cm was buying and supporting his postion and that the 506 support that we talked about as support may not get hit and the market is string and didnt retrace today so if the 522 area in beans is taken out we can have a good move higher wheat acted well tody as well nd that has been on the ropes relative to the rest of the grains questions? okay lets talk about RISK MANAGEMENT ok !!!! some people User [Randy /209.130.164.95] joined forum at Wed Mar 08 21:28:20 EST 2000 like to use an equity stop $$$$ stop some poele like to use a percenage of equity stop hi randy hi some popel like to place a stop under a major support or above a major resisatnce which is the best kind of stop to use? well lets discuss all 3 outside support and resistence equity stop lets say that u have small acocunt and u are trading scared u may only want to risk a samll amount of money sounds like me lol and place a stop above support if long or under resisatnce if short User [sherri /207.112.162.158] joined forum at Wed Mar 08 21:31:10 EST 2000 hi sherri hey sherri well if you are long and place your stop above support hey u probably will get hit and the market will take off withought u the stop shuld be under that support but with limited funds you deccided not to do this hi sherri so you were right the mrket went up but you were wrong because th e stop wasnt in the RIGHT place do you see what I am sating? y saying yes y y y y poor stop placement because you are under capitialized I think we all may have been there at some point or another.. next some people will use a percentage stop say.. 1 percent of equity like amos mentioned last night so a 100k account will risk 1000 dollars if you did this with a 5k account what would be our risk if it was 1 percent ? 50 bucks a commission 50 50 cant really do this trade can u with slippage and all about the commissions, leaving nothing 4 slippage or error not much of a stop so that is where the $$$ stop comes in right u r all right so 1 percent on a small account CANT be done questions on the risk management of the 2 examples I gavce? gave unless your trading Mid Am and then it's iffy well in midam corn it is 5 cents k 50 bucks midam = hi slippage & lousy executions? no not really I getde cent executions on the midam bad spacing comm high percentage of cost on midam doesn't mid am pretty closely follow movements of the cbot large contracts? yes it can be sal Yes Randy now the third money management then you might get away with a 5 cent stop I like to place a stop at a level that if I get stopped out the market trend will changed the oposite of the way I thought the market was going this happened to me in sugar about a month ago so do you place order for two? to stop and reverse? I was long placed my stop under the trendline and it stopped me out and the market went 50 points lower that is not a bad idea in some markets sal so if I buy sugar at 540 and my trendline support is at 500 where should I place my stop? maybe like 486? now what if I cant or dont ant to risk 54 points in sugar about 600 bucks ? I must either get better entry point you figure the risk reward first. Then you see if you can afford were the stop MUST be placed based on sup/res. and if I can do this buy a breakout with a closer stop very good steve it is always a risk to reward game ALWAYS u want to have at least 3 to 1 risk to reward sometimes a market stalls and u ant out eailer want and u ended up risking what u made example today I had sebveral clienst long gold the stock amrket began to rally gold didnt look strong to me intraday it should have rallied sharper based on yesterday good cloase but when the market labored I got out at 295 and some at 29420 area my point s I thought gold would go to 300 so my ridk to reward was 4 to 1 what was entry point? but as the market didnt showed strenghth I had to liquidate 28970 stop was at 29630 what if clients had longer term view, would you have held? What made you think it would go to $300? very very good point sal Yes I would have and my stop would be under contract lows or at least under the creek area I had my count there mr j ok also it was a psychological number like nasdaq 5k yesterday so those are the 3 types of money management exept the fiest one is based purely on an undercaptialixe trader. first ok, hypotheitically our jim (fromlast nite) wanted to short crude, say the volatility and risk were too much, could he have gone with an int the money put with a delta about 5o and held for the day... User [RobinH] left forum at Wed Mar 08 21:52:41 EST 2000 meant at the money if up he made 1/2 future , if down risk 1/2 as much User [gary fullett /152.166.246.10] joined forum at Wed Mar 08 21:54:25 EST 2000 sorry I got logged off sodoes everyone undersatnd risk magement the 3 ways? y gary can you see my ? above? y the best to me is the third way place the stop undermajor support or resisatnce no i didnt sal sorry the money may be more expensive but in the long run I think more profitable can u repeat sal? ok, let's say jim wanted to short crude last nite I donrt like the percentage stop,, okay' k but risk was too high, could he have got at the money put with delta of 50 to play short term drop? 1/2 profit, but only 1/2 risk? kinda creating your own daily mid am yes that could have been done the problem with options in crude is that u pay a high price for volitity in options but yes an option near at the money would have been great the problem with that is that last night u couldnt have bought a put becaus eit is thin and the amrket was down sharply k u would have to pay p alot to get in and would nt have made much money today if any so how did you play crude, where was yourovernight stop> amos do you have a commnet about risk management? it was above the high made early in the evening 3429 area yes and one day I will post my rules. good... It is more important than market analysis. I do not know which of the 3 methods is best--it has to do y can u shed some light tonight or should we wait for the rules to be posted with personality and fathers account size . Gary, have sort of related risk management ? u might only want to discuss one on one, but do u have quidelines for "appropriate" size modest a/c, or is that ompossible issue? what about diversification , like goldilocks what is tooooo much, what's not enough? davep that is best answered one on one to ones needs and risk level good question sal a good rule of thimb is that u should have more than 40 percent tied up in margin so if u have a 10 k account 4 k should be only used for margin why do I say this? cuz a leverage for drawdowns so you dont have to meet a margin call in case of drawdown,,, yes so if u lose several thousand you can ride out th move against u helps prevent insomnia yes lamrsh Baruch Braruk a famous trader once said about margin " put a position on so you can sleep at night" your sleep level if you are overmargined Bernard Baruch u will not sllep well Linda Raschke mentioned she has courage to wait for place to sell higher even after she has had BIG loss sorry mos that is what i meant my apology I doubled up his name I DONT like to ad to losers I never have if I am wrong I should get out not add to misery i meant close out not sell higher, sorry amos do u have a comment about adidng to osing postions? losing Read Jesse Livermore. Unless you ARE the CM you should never do it I have many many times her point was a percipitious drop is followed by AR which she waits for to close understandwhat amos and I are saying The concept of money and risk managements (two related, but different issues) is something I agree with that that works agains human nature. Even tho we BUY insurance, we noramlly do not expect to die, or get into a car accident. I have a money management theory " you Must hold out for your 3 to 1 profit objective to cover previous losses and still have profit". Hope, positive thinking, optimisms--are human nature. The market place is the OPPOSITE of human nature and therefore you have to get used to think it terms of losses. THe Phantom of the Pits (I have the site) says that rule number one-- you have to think losses. You have to accdept losses. he's my hero :) Amos, can u reveal who he is? When Richard Dennis recruied his turtles--one of the questions in the WSJ was : Do you LOVE taking losses? So money management--means--alwasy think: "WHat is the worst case scenario? and CAN I withstand it with out being thrown out without possibiility to fight another day. The PHantom of the pits is a clever marketeer but hasnt the dennis fund tapped out several times? He's not THAT clevr is he? I downloaded his book for the cost of the paper. the fact that someone loses does not mean he is not smart. yes gary ...he has :)\ Van Goch died very poor. I know sherri I have worked with him me too dave here is POP the Phantom of the pit: http://www.csinet.net/asimpson/forward.html no amos but in this biz money is the only rason we trade if we didnt trade to make money smarts does us no good Money is a mysterious word. MUch< constant? enough? so did livermore die poor the idea of trading is take the first loss the first loss ids the best loss and to make more than u lose the reality in this business I do not know, he committed suicide--but he probably could always make money. He said money , per se, is that isf u are right 30 percnet of the time you should make money did not interest him. He said money was the power to accomlish your wishes. livermore / van gogh both suicidal, nice company think i ll cut off my ear for luck lol Hemingway, Kennedy, Martin luther King. King Solomon King Solomon , in particular: look: the wisest man on earth and he went to sleep with his fathers. ill stick with roy rogers, mickey mantle arnie palmer ,and charles schultz the good guys :)lol Warren Buffett dances every morning to work. not lately with his stock :) i d dance too if i were worth billions !!!1 User [fibo /206.104.30.215] joined forum at Wed Mar 08 22:20:34 EST 2000 that is because he is so rich and the money dances with him ditto sal! I wrote it in a mathematical form once amos do you want to start with the bean action? gary the CM is driving me crazy on these grains :-) okay ... todayb was easy i thought I thyink the beans tested 509, bounced and closed strong. Should continue buy the lower opening place stop under 503 up strongly to the 523 area did u like the action today? Van Damm was better lol I thought you were a steven seagall fan? No, he is Jewish oh that right :) fibo...explain what you are talking about I do not thi8nk that the daily action is important now in the grains the 520-522 level is the next s resisatnce in grains to me We are ina waiting period and each individual day is insignificant the weekly is more important now? absolutely, and the monthly so buy the grains and be able to finance them for a move higher? remember: If April goes above Jan-March--it is a bullish sign the last 3 days have just been sideways yes in a range fibo buy the breaks sell some on the rallies what do u feel is the strongest grain? Meal do u feel the bean complex will lead everything higher lamrsh :) I do not think that way. I want to judge each market on its own merit okay fair enought but the meal seems to have the best action grains are up tonite ;) :) yes I mentioned that fivo how is tonight different from all other nights? fibo sorry :)lol it is wednesday and yesterday was tuesday rotfl :) so it is a differnt night it's not amos but when you are long you like to see it up anytime :-) amen very true fibo very true fibo that was a loaded statement amen on ash wednesday interesting :) grains seemed to be doing some nice work at these levels and the accumaultion is getting more and more everyday every dip is bought so this move can be a large one what would cause the market to move out of this range? weather flight to quality demand what excuse would the cm use? when CM accumulates all they want good point, on the dips being bought,..like that I mention this for a reason vey well said very the excuse would be "drought" russia buy 100 billion bushels Friday is a grain report Pinochet do u think that this may be the "news" that the cm uses? news- beans cure impotence, and sagging breats! absolutely lol lol so on Friday when the :news " is out and if the market rallies sharply sal, that is a start-up lol@sal :) amos Pinochet? nothing worsse than sagging breats! they will use excuses on why this happened won't beans follow crude? but a wyckoff student should be ready to anticpate this move right? sal :) Tofu maybe as wyckoff students we hould anticipate the news look at the pices of the puzzle the "news" shouldnt surprise us NO GARY, we shuld IGNORE them as we are positioned for the "news" i know we should ignore news what I am saying is that the news will give the public thereason to support the cms postions what if this is distribution? we should "know the news" before so the "news " doesnt surprise us what is distribution sherri? we dont trade on news cm selling to buyers what market? beans when? but the news will aloow the funds and public to support our position past week we are at 27 year lows and this is distribution? they are record short you know them personally? LOL you mean the COT? just don't know how to tell the difference amos I think we failed WHat do you mean we, WHite Man? dont tell the differnce with the cot lol watch volume and price action distribution in beans? after we talked them up lol @ amos,..again I am not white I mean we were alking about support in benas and the Cot says short them? according to my chart gary beans have been following trendlines nicely sherri, distribution is the process of selling something for the purpose of mine as well randy taking prices down. WHere do you think we go? just asking amos what if please ask sherri The weekly chart had a higher high!! we are here to help... yes the weekly and monthly downtrendlines were broken, there is a possible preliminary support last July and a selling clilmax and we have seen a potential automatic rally. What more do I need? Why should I think that CM is short if the process on the chart say says he is BUYING!?> ok ok what? sherri, if you bring trendlines off the lows of 12/13, 12/17, 1/3 and 1/10 you will see that may soybeans are following the trendlines almost perfectly. he is buying...so is everybody else so amos could be dead right long term and sherri could be right this week? NO, most people on forums are short! I do not want to be dead any side didn't know that amos got to go people, thanks for another GREAT chat, nite. oops You should get to know that amos nite lmarsh me either amos that is why I am asking User [lmarsh] left forum at Wed Mar 08 22:48:25 EST 2000 that is OK,. I am having a ball NEXT sheeri on the monthly PS was in Nov Dec 1998 SC in July 99 BTW, sherri-if I am wrong--I have a stop loss. right amos...me too by the way...I am long sherri that is markets everyone has the right to thier opinionis amos since you look at weeklies on beans , is your stopped based on weeklies also should be. like crude last night i was short term bearish amos longer term bullish but we should all think with logic and stops didn't say I was bearish gary I know u didnt amos if stopped is basedon weeklies how do you apply to different month contracts but when u mentioned distribution this means to me lower prices you use continuation chart! please explain for beans when you look at Lussier's site, he even uses continuation on the DAILY!!! the stop on the continuation after March expires will be the last low that March did around the 495 area that is carried into may? Yes what happens when you go from old tonew crop/ yes sal IThat is always my preferance (new crop , that is) must be getting sleepy, justgot lost Sal, when you look at long term charts- you neve think old, new--it is one continuopus market. My reference to old and new had nothing to do wiht the market ok but stop of 495 may is x amount below close, that 495 for july is X plus 10 below its close Too bad, sal , such is life so you have to allow more room for more time in future? Look, you do not get anything for nothing. IF you want to make the big bucks in Nov beans--you have to take a larger rist. Pure and simple yeah, got it :) but if you can buy good support in nov beans you can help eliamte lot of that risk that is why buying support is important it will help in risk and money mangement any other questions? good class tonight so one might go long term nov and trade may? thanks gary & amos for going over the beans I did this for u fibo we are all in the same boat:) :-) thanks we thrashed them, did n't we?
